Tampa Bay and Tarheels Score Big at ACC Tournament

This past March, one of college basketball's most prestigious conference tournaments made its first visit to the state of Florida. The 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament saw the University of North Carolina Tar Heels defeat the North Carolina State Wolfpack, 89-80, in route to their 18th conference title at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Bay area businesses were at the forefront of those who benefited from the influx of visitors. Several downtown restaurants reported a 75 percent increase in revenue while downtown hotels were sold out months in advance. Highlights of the tournament included numerous successful ancillary events such as ACC FanFest, Tournament Tailgate, University Day, Legends Brunch, and Channelside Courtside Party Zone.

"We are elated with the overwhelming feedback we have received from local businesses regarding the significant impact that they experienced during the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament," said Rob Higgins, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission.  "Our community raised the bar once again with the phenomenal job they did in accommodating our valued visitors from the Atlantic Coast Conference."

The Channelside area was also a big draw for sports fans during the tournament.  With locations like the Florida Aquarium, Newk's Restaurant, Dave Andreychuk's Grille, Stumps Supper Club, Howl-At-The-Moon and others reporting big gains during the ACC. The Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau anticipates many return visitors because of the involvement and support generated by the community and local businesses.

"I think a lot of people were surprised by our community when they arrived in Tampa for the ACC Tournament," said Paul Catoe, President and CEO of the Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau. "It was nice to meet so many people enjoying our city for the first time. They'll be back."

"The ACC Tournament was very good to us," says Thom Stork, President and CEO of The Florida Aquarium. "I believe the fans came to Tampa for the tournament and made it a vacation destination. They stayed in Tampa even after their teams lost in the early rounds. There were people with Maryland, Duke and Wake Forest shirts walking around the aquarium all weekend."

ESPNU Women's Basketball Invitational To Debut  Nov. 15 In Tampa

As a prelude to the 2008 Women's Final Four, ESPN Regional Television (ERT), the Tampa Bay Sports Commission and the St. Pete Times Forum have announced the creation of the ESPNU Women's Basketball Invitational, a one-night, women's college basketball doubleheader to be televised live on ESPNU on Nov. 15, 2007.

The early-season doubleheader will be held at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa and will tip off the 2007-2008 women's college basketball season for four top college basketball programs, including Duke University, the University of Oklahoma, the University of South Florida and the University of Tennessee.  All four schools qualified for post-season play in 2007 with Tennessee winning the National Championship.

"We are excited to host the ESPNU Women's Basketball Invitational in Tampa," said Pete Derzis, senior vice president and general manager of ESPN Regional Television.  "It's a great way to celebrate women's college basketball by starting and ending the year with two events in the same fantastic city."

The Forum will also serve as the host site for the 2008 Women's Final Four on April 6 and 8.

"We're pleased to be able to work with ESPNU and start the 2007-2008 women's basketball season on the same court where the national champion will be crowned," said Rob Higgins, Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission.  "To be able to host these four elite level basketball programs in this setting speaks volumes to the strength of our sports community."

Duke qualified for the 2007 NCAA Tournament as a one seed and finished the regular season with a 31-1 record.  In the first of two games, the Blue Devils, who have made three of the last six Final Four trips in 2002, 2003 and 2006, will square off against South Florida at 7 p.m. ET. The Bulls have qualified for post-season play the last four years.

In a game set to begin at 9 p.m, Tennessee, winner of three consecutive NCAA championships from 1996 to 1998 and the winner of the NCAA Tournament this year, will face Oklahoma.  The Sooners entered the 2007 NCAA Tournament as a three seed and last advanced to the Final Four in 2002, finishing as the runner-up in the tournament.

Tickets for the ESPNU Invitational will be available through Ticketmaster locations starting in July.
