TAMPA, FL – On Saturday, March 22, Adventure Island hosted one of the areas premier youth events, the second-annual Tampa Bay Kids Triathlon. Presented by the Tampa Bay Sports Commission (TBSC) and the Event Development Institute (EDI), over 275 kids ranging from ages 6-14, successfully competed in the U.S. Triathlon sanctioned event at the Busch Gardens’ waterpark.
“Thanks to our great partners at Busch Gardens and Adventure Island we were able to grow the event in its second year, while maintaining its reputation as one of the most fun and unique kid’s triathlons in the country,” said TBKT Event Manager Claire Lessinger. “It's an incredibly rewarding moment for our organization to watch the participants cross the finish line, receive their medals and to see their families beam with pride from the sidelines."
Continuing its tradition of two divisions, junior varsity (6-10) and varsity (11-14), the triathlon featured new race age subdivisions to increase competition. The four new race brackets were highlighted by the following age groups: 6-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14.
The triathlon course remained true to its unique host site as its opening swim leg down the Rambling Bayou punctuated the morning. After skirting the perimeter of Busch Gardens on the bike course, the groups made their final push across the finish after trekking across Adventure Island property, where they were welcomed by a boisterous crowd of nearly a thousand fans.
Turner Glenn (12:38) clocked the best time in the boys 6-8 age group, while his counterpart, Abigail Hite, notched a girls top-time of 13:26. The 9-10 age group featured Lawson McLeod (10:21) and Kinsley White (11:46) pacing the field with top times, while Reed Legg (15:31) and Melody McLeod (17:04) owned the 11-12 age bracket best times. Rounding out the winners in the 13-14 age bracket was Chase Doty (15:27) and Ellie Simmons (18:21).
Busch Gardens/Adventure Island again delivered on its unique pre and post-race entertainment, amusing on-lookers and participants with up-close encounters with theme park wildlife, stilt walkers and live music. Also, all participants were given the opportunity to ‘Stay & Play’ at Adventure Island Waterpark as part of their pre-registration packet.
Also, R.B. Roush was randomly selected as the winner of the new Dolce Specialized Youth Bike, courtesy of Cycle Sports Concepts.
