Tampa Bay area Skaters win 15 medals at Sunshine State Games Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -Tampa Bay area figure skaters totaled 15 medals at the Sunshine State Games Figure Skating Championships, held May 15-17 at Incredible Ice in Coral Springs. Over the course of the three-day event, 268 skaters skated over 600 individual events.

Breaking down the 15 medal winning performances, 17 Tampa Bay area skaters earned five gold medals, four silver medals and six bronze medals.

Leading the way for the Tampa Bay area contingent were 14-year old Rayna Dereus, of Brandon, who won gold medals in the Junior Ladies Short Program and the Junior Ladies Free Skating. Sarah Bowman, a 12-year old from Lutz, also earned a pair of gold medals in the Pre Silver Solo Dance and Silver Solo Dance

Registration continues for upcoming Florida’s Sunshine State Games events. The 2009 Summer Games, featuring action in 19 sports, will be held June 12-14 in Polk County. Also taking place that weekend are the Sunshine State Games Water Polo Championships in Seminole County, the Sunshine State Games Inline Hockey Tournament in Fort Myers and the Sunshine State Games Track & Field Championships in Clermont.
