TAMPA, Fla. – USL announced today the dates for the second annual USL W-League Combine. The event will be held Thursday, September 24 through Sunday, September 27 at Ed Radice Sports Complex in Northwest Tampa, Florida.
“Improving on an event that sent 35 players to seven WPS
franchises will not be an easy task,” said USL Combine
Coordinator, Amanda Duffy. “Our overall objective in 2008 was
to get as many W-League players as possible into the WPS Combine
and eventually into WPS preseason camps. We have had a lot of
success as our players continue to fill WPS rosters throughout
their inaugural season.”
“This year we are looking to raise the bar in terms of talent,” added Duffy, a former professional player with Danmarks IF of the Swedish First Division. “We also want to adapt some new features into the combine schedule that will enable the next round of WPS players to be identified by coaching staffs.”
In an attempt to raise the level of talent at the event, the acceptance numbers at the 2009 USL Women’s Combine will drop from 128 players to 90. Accordingly, the number of matches per day at this event has dropped from four to three. One goalkeeper specific session will occur on the second day of training. Also carrying over from the 2008 schedule is a Q&A session run by WPS.
“In addition to sending at least one player to each of the seven WPS franchises in our first year, several players moved on to coach at a higher level,” said USL W-League Director, Melanie Fitzgerald. “A highly successful W-League player in 2008, Sarah Steinmann (Atlanta Silverbacks) became the Assistant Coach at Auburn University. Staci Wilson (Tampa Bay Hellenic) was recently introduced as the Assistant Coach of 2010 WPS side Philadelphia Independence, further expanding the avenue between the W-League and WPS. ”
Players invited to the 2009 USL W-League Combine will be selected through an application process which begins today.
Players attending the 2009 USL W-League Combine will be housed at Mainsail Suites in west Tampa.
