TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Krewe rugby team returned to town late Sunday night from Columbia, SC, where it battled through the first two rounds of the USA Rugby National Championships. After winning the USA Rugby South championship three weeks ago, the Krewe faced Chicago in the first round of 16. The Krewe gave up 17 points through the first 60 minutes, but dug deep and fought hard to post 26 unanswered points in the final 20 minutes.
The team advanced through the single elimination tournament to Sunday to face Brandywine (PA), which has been to the final four a couple of times in recent years. This time the Krewe came out focused from the first whistle and put up 32 points to Brandywine’s 5. It’s on to Colorado now.
The final round of the USA Rugby national championships runs June 5 – 6 in Glendale, CO – a suburb of Denver – at Infinity Park. The Krewe is scheduled to play Snake River out of Boise, ID, on Saturday. The other two teams still standing are Doylestown (PA) and San Francisco. Here’s a link to the tournament schedule. You’ll see that the DII (the Krewe’s division) finals will be televised on FSN. http://www.infinityparkatglendale.com/tournaments/10/mens-club-championships.php
