TAMPA, Fla. – Twenty-four teams from all over the country will head to Tampa this weekend for the first ever George M. Steinbrenner Wood Bat Classic, Friday, Saturday & Sunday, October 15-17. Teams are a composition of up and coming talent under the age of 17.
Verdero is sponsoring the three day tournament which will be held at George M. Steinbrenner Field and the Yankees’ Player Development Complex on Himes Avenue. The first round of play will commence Friday with Saturday thinning out the field before the Championship game Sunday, 9:00a.m. at Steinbrenner Field.
“The Yankees are excited to be hosting this event to honor the late Yankees’ principal owner, George M. Steinbrenner” said Felix Lopez, Executive Vice President. Steinbrenner was a well known philanthropist in the Tampa area and played an important role in youth athletics.
“Not only is this event making an positive economic impact on our community but it is also such an exciting opportunity for the kids to play in a professional facility, fueling their dream to one day reach a professional level of play” said Lopez.
