TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa Bay Krewe Rugby opens its 2011-2012 campaign with new title sponsors and a new home field. Partnering with the Laser Spine Institute and the University of South Florida, Krewe Rugby will field two teams in the USA Rugby Men’s Division and looks to continue the success it has earned over the past several years. The LSI offers a safe and effective alternative to open back and neck surgeries, fusions, and artificial disc replacements by using endoscopic laser-assisted procedures, alleviating the pain and symptoms of sufferers around the world. The University of South Florida is a comprehensive metropolitan research university, with campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota and USF Polytechnic. The school has more than 47,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students in 236 various programs.
Representing the entire West-Central region of Florida, Krewe will host its first league matches of the 2011-2012 campaign at the USF Track & Stadium on November 19, 2011. Krewe’s Division II team will open league play with a 5 p.m. kickoff against its cross-state rival Daytona. Coaches Kevin McWilliams and Larry Grant, both integral parts of Krewe’s national success, will lead a mixed group of veteran and junior players in this first match at the Division II level. This match is the start of a very competitive statewide schedule for the Division II side.
Krewe’s Division I team played its last league match on June 5, of this year in Glendale, CO for the USA Rugby Men’s National Championship against its southeast rival New Orleans. The team had beaten New Orleans three times during the season and was playing in defense of its 2010 National Championship over Doylestown, but the Krewe narrowly lost 27-21. Kicking off at 7 p.m., Krewe’s Division I team will have its first shot at redemption as it opens the season against the reigning USA Rugby men’s national champions. Tickets will be $5 at the gate and ticket-holders 21 years and up will be able to purchase $1 beers.
