TAMPA, Fla. – Today’s the day; local area high school football student-athletes will select which college or university to pursue their future athletic and academic endeavors. In fact, with so many highly-touted recruits coming out of Hillsborough County, it appears much of the nation’s eyes will be focused on the Tampa Bay area for many of Wednesday’s National Signing Day festivities.
Still, as these future student-athletes begin to ink their name to scholarships, those within the Tampa Bay Sports Commission can only smile. For the past two years the TBSC, in conjunction with DeBartolo Sports and Events, has hosted a series of football combines to help expose local high school talent to potential college suitors. Providing high school athletes with the opportunity to exhibit their skills is a critical tool in the recruiting process and these combines provide prospects the ideal platform to prove that they can be a valuable addition to a team and school.
In addition to the annual combine, the TBSC, in partnership with the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, also contributes to our youth’s success by hosting the Hillsborough County East/West All-Star Game. This platform puts the best area talent on the field of Raymond James Stadium, allowing them to compete in one the TBSC’s finest local amateur competitions of the year.
These events help provide future scholarship exposure for many in our Tampa Bay community, and allow them to demonstrate the skills that will help them succeed at the next level, both in the classroom and on the field.
2013 is further proof of the two events successes. As of Wednesday evening, 22 future collegiate student-athletes have signed their names to scholarships, as institutions such as the University of South Florida, Michigan State, Nebraska, and Louisville will provide a home for Tampa Bay’s future college participants.
Signing day does not mark the end of a student-athlete’s dreams to finding a future college home. A full slate of opportunities still exists as recruitment fairs and other avenues will assist these youth with landing in the perfect spot, athletically and academically.
