GLAZERS SCORE TOUCHDOWN FOR AMATEUR SPORTS

May 20, 2009

Tampa, FL – Last weekend, the Glazer Family Foundation presented its annual contribution to the Tampa Bay Sports Commission (TBSC), representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ dedication to youth and amateur sports in Tampa Bay.

The check presentation ceremony took place on Saturday, May 23 at 9 a.m. at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa at the sports commission’s annual high school football combine. Representatives from the Buccaneers and the TBSC were on-hand for comments and to present the check to the Sports Commission.

"The Buccaneers are proud to continue their tremendous relationship with the Tampa Bay Sports Commission," said Buccaneers Vice President of Business Administration Brian Ford. "The Commission plays an integral role in our community and the Buccaneers are excited to be a part of its outstanding service."

In 1997, Malcolm Glazer, owner and president of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, met with the Tampa Bay Sports Commission (TBSC) and made a commitment that his team would contribute $7,500 to the Tampa Bay Sports Commission for every regular season game the Buccaneers won for the next 30 years. Then, following the 2006 season, the Glazers and Tampa Bay Sports Commission agreed to a fixed contribution of $62,000 annually.

The Tampa Bay Sports Commission uses the funds to support its annual events, including all-star football, soccer and basketball games for Bay-area children, as well as its local High School Football Combine, which has helped more than 100 area high school athletes earn college scholarships throughout the last four years.

“Thank you to the Glazer Family Foundation for all that you continue to provide for our community and our children with this contribution,” said Tampa Bay Sports Commissioner Executive Director Rob Higgins. “You are making a tremendous difference in several kids’ lives and we could not be more grateful.”

This year’s Combine took place at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, May 23 as well. The combine is in its sixth year and has helped produce over 125 college scholarships and serves as one of the Tampa Bay area’s main athletic scholarship generators.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than 350 rising high school seniors from across the southeastern United States, with a primary focus on Hillsborough County, were on-hand looking to showcase their football skills to college football coaches from across the nation in hopes of earning an athletic scholarship.

The TBSC mission is to attract, promote and/or organize major amateur sporting events and grassroots youth sports programs that foster the ongoing development and quality of life for the entire Tampa Bay area.
