Global workout craze Hyrox to host major event in downtown Tampa

An indoor fitness competition with a cult following will debut in Tampa this fall, bringing tens of thousands of people to the urban core.
Hyrox, an indoor fitness competition that combines running with functional workout stations — like sled pushes and rowing — will hold its inaugural Tampa Bay race at the Tampa Convention Center from Oct. 23 to 25. It was founded in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany , and came to the U.S. in 2019.
Jason Aughey , senior vice president of sports tourism with the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, said they expect the event to bring north of 15,000 athletes, along with their families and other observers. The 2025 event in Dallas had roughly 17,000 participants and 30,000 spectators, half of whom were from out of state.
Aughey said Visit Tampa Bay and the TBSC worked with Hyrox and quickly realized the convention center was an ideal location for the indoor event. They’ve been working with the group since fall 2025 and finalized the agreement a few weeks ago.
“This was a new market that they absolutely wanted to be in,” Aughey said.
Hyrox bills itself as bridging the gap between gym fitness and endurance racing. Nick Cheesman, director of programming at Sukha Club Tampa in North Hyde Park, said his gym began offering a Hyrox class in January.
It quickly attracted a strong following, in part because the workout has “softened the image of fitness competitions.” While by no means an easy workout, Cheesman said, Hyrox has branded itself as being more accessible than other major fitness competitions, like CrossFit.
“The image [CrossFit] was giving off was too high intensity , too dangerous, or that you had to do a lot of training to get good at some of the movements,” Cheesman said. “Whereas Hyrox isn’t easy by any means — it’s an extremely hard and long event — but it doesn’t require a massive set of skills. Everyone can run, everyone can learn to move the sled and use the machines, and once you do, you just get better and better every time you do it.”
Hyrox, Cheesman said, taps into that spirit of camaraderie. Its races are treated like giant parties, including a live DJ, cheering crowds and vendors. Participants get patches at the end of their race — much like marathoners get stickers for their cars — and he said it allows them to “build a community” everywhere they go.
“It makes people feel like a high school or college athlete again and that they’re part of a bigger community ,” Cheesman said.“You go to a gym with a Hyrox class when you’re traveling and meet someone there and start chatting about what races you’ve done and then suddenly , you’re planning to do the next race as a doubles. ... You make friends and travel the world with these people and that encourages even more of a focus on your health.”
Hyrox has quickly expanded its events to meet the ever-growing demand from its ballooning audience. In October, the company is hosting its first cruise — a four-day , adult-only Mediterranean voyage. The cruise is open only to residents of the EU and the U.K., but strong demand suggests the company could soon expand the event to other markets.
Cheesman said its selection of Tampa acts as a spotlight on the city’s dedication to health and wellness, and that he expects to see it return year after year due to the strong base in the region. He compared the hype for Hyrox to that of major concerts that sell out in minutes, as many participants set alarms to be online and ready to enter the queue as soon as ticket sales open.
The event will have heats running from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aughey said he expects to see a “pretty solid blend” of local and out-of-town participation.
“A trend we see in the sports tourism world pretty regularly is people who are looking to turn their experiences into a vacation,” Aughey said. “We’ll see more stays on the front end or people staying later because they want to take advantage of all that the destination has to offer.”
